Seyoon Lee ’12 of Korea is a member of the Advanced Math/Science Research class and is this week’s featured student. Seyoon began meeting with his mentor, Dr. Fatemeh Shahedipour-Sandvik (Shadi), during the first semester. Dr. Shadi is an Associate Professor of Nanoengineering at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany. The college has more than 2,500 researchers, and partnerships with more than 250 global technology companies, including the world’s leading nanoelectronics companies and organizations.

Professor Shahedipour-Sandvik's research is focused on the development of high performance wide bandgap III-Nitride optoelectronic materials and devices. The applications of devices based on this material system ranges from LEDs for solid state lighting (LEDs) to detectors for military (Space-to-space covert operation), civilian (air and water purification) and scientific (UV astronomy) applications to RF-power devices for communication.

Seyoon has not been assigned a formal project this year because he is spending his sophomore year learning how to operate various tools in the laboratory and also doing research on solid state electronics. Seyoon will design a project during his junior year and then enter his work as a senior in the INTEL Science Talent Search Competition. “ I’m thankful that I have been given the opportunity to work with Dr.Shadi,” said Seyoon. “I could not even imagine doing this if I was in Korea. The research course is pretty intense and time-consuming work to do during busy school days, but it is also a great way to be free from ordinary school work and jump into real science.”

Course instructor and Math Department Chair Kurt Schleunes is enthusiastic about the opportunity to have a student like Seyoon join the Advanced Math/Science Research class early in his high school career. “It’s pretty exciting to have a sophomore in the research course this year. Seyoon is an incredibly talented and dedicated student with a real passion for science. Our philosophy here at Berkshire is that if a student is ready for something like the research course, then let them go for it.”

Seyoon is currently a member of the AP Calculus BC and the Advanced Placement Chemistry classes. He enjoys playing the clarinet and basketball. In his free time he loves to watch comedy shows. “Laughing out loud helps me manage my stress levels,” said Seyoon.

What does he like most about Berkshire? “ The best thing about Berkshire is that everyone says 'hi' to each other. All the students and teachers are very open and kind,” said Seyoon.
